Selecting the Best Nursing Home

Serving Phoenix, Scottsdale and All of Arizona

There are a number of factors that need to be considered when choosing a nursing home for a loved one. Location often plays a role as close proximity allows for frequent visits, but location alone should not be the determining factor. Other considerations such as cleanliness, staff-to-patient ratio, employee training and effectiveness, and home ratings from trusted sources must also be taken into account to ensure the safety and comfort of your loved one while in the care of your chosen facility. Taking time to establish these things is one of the most effective ways to help prevent nursing home abuse and neglect.

If you suspect a loved one is suffering any form of mistreatment at their care facility in Arizona, please contact Cullan & Cullan, M.D., J.D. online or by calling (602) 200-9999 today to schedule a free consultation with one of our experienced nursing home attorneys.

Things to Look for in a Care Facility

Medicare maintains a searchable database of nursing homes in every area of the country. This resource provides rating information and can be used as a starting point in selecting a home. However, recent evidence has cast much doubt on the effectiveness of this rating system and it should not be relied upon as your sole source of information.

When selecting a home, be sure to visit several in the area to meet with managers and staff, tour the facilities, and get a feel for the environment they provide. Look for things that may indicate hygienic concerns, patient dissatisfaction, neglect, or abuse, and make a note of anything you find even remotely troubling. If you are on the fence or having a difficult time choosing between a few homes, you can take your notes to the manager to express concerns and gauge your comfort with their responses. Remember, the health and happiness of your loved one often depends on the selection you make.

Even when you carefully select a home, abuse or neglect may occur. If this happens, please contact the experienced Arizona nursing home attorneys at Cullan & Cullan to schedule a free consultation and learn more about your rights.
